It’s best to install cages early in the spring, or at planting time, before the foliage gets bushy. Plan ahead, for plants that get tall and require staking or support cages. The soil covering the planting hole should be even with the surrounding soil, or up to one inch higher than the top of the root ball. Firm the soil down around the plant by hand, tamping with the flat side of a small trowel, or even by pressing down on the soil by foot. Push the soil gently around the roots filling in empty space around the root ball. This is especially important if the roots are dense and have filled up the container. Grasping the plant at the top of the root ball, use your finger to lightly rake the roots apart. This plant does best in full sun to partial shade. As an evegreen perennial, this plant will typically keep its form and foliage year-round. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 8 years. Its foliage tends to remain dense right to the ground, not requiring facer plants in front. This is a relatively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season.
